Jumping Amsterdam and Subli extend cooperation

Jumping Amsterdam and Subli have extended their cooperation until 2026. "The all-deciding final of the previous edition could fortunately take place again at Jumping Amsterdam and it was really fantastic to be back here. It is the dream of every rider to be able to ride there. With the Subli Competition we can offer this unique opportunity," said Remco Zuidam, product and sales manager of Subli.

The 2023 Subli Competition gets underway

The Subli Competition for four- and five-year-old dressage horses is about to start again. This year the competition consists of eight selection competitions (both indoor and outdoor), a semi-final and the final. The two best results from the selection competitions count for placement in the semi-finals, where the best fifteen horses per age group may participate. The best five horses per age group will be invited to the finals during Jumping Amsterdam. The first selection race of the new season will be held in Delft on Tuesday, May 30. You can register through the Equicompetition website.

Good exercise

"The Subli Competition is a beautiful competition, the selection competitions are held at beautiful accommodations. It is a good exercise for young horses and you can see how your horse is doing compared to his peers," says Renate van Uytert-van Vliet. Riders are allowed to put together their own tests, but a number of mandatory exercises must be shown. "It is one of the few competitions in which young stallions are also allowed to participate."

Education and training

Irene Verheul, general director of Jumping Amsterdam, added: "Education and training are very important to us, in the broadest sense of the word. That this coincides with training Holland's best young horses is completely in keeping with Jumping Amsterdam."

Bart Veeze and Beni Pachl excel during semifinal Subli Competition

Only the best competitors from the previous nine selection competitions of the Subli Competition for Young Dressage Horses were allowed to participate in the semi-finals on Saturday, December 10 in Harmelen. This select group was well ridden with Bart Veeze and Nero coming out on top in the four-year-olds class. The class for five-year-olds was won by Beni Pachl with Hexagons Miamanda.

In the four-year-olds, 15 horses were selected for the semi-finals and in the five-year-olds, 11 combinations came to the start of the semi-finals of the Subli Competition 2022. At stake was a ticket to the coveted final on January 26, 2023 during Jumping Amsterdam. Only five combinations per age division may compete in the RAI Amsterdam for the title in the Subli Competition for Young Dressage Horses.

Four-year-olds

Bart Veeze entered the ring with Nero as second and immediately impressed the judges present Adriaan Hamoen and Floor Droge. Judge Adriaan Hamoen spoke full of praise for the winner: "The horse Nero possesses incredible quality. It all looks very natural and he goes through the arena with the greatest ease with his ears on. Nero is a horse with an awful lot of power. Especially his walk is a big plus and we rewarded it with a 9.5. He is also presented very professionally by Bart. This combination really makes us very happy."
Bart himself was also very happy with his performance. He says: "Nero gives me a very nice feeling. He runs the test very steady and nowhere does it get too difficult for him. That's really exceptional for a four-year-old. Our high score of 88 was a nice and nice confirmation of my good feeling about the test. I am very much looking forward to riding the final with him in Amsterdam. I very much hope that this edition may go ahead during Jumping Amsterdam. Because of all the coronagraphs it was always canceled at the last minute while I had good horses in previous editions. But I am confident that I can now ride Nero in the RAI. I'm sure it will be super fun!"
The judges were also very pleased with number 2 Femke de Laat with Nashville Sw. Adriaan: "The overall picture looked very good and the horse showed a lot of power in the trot. We would only have liked to see a little more activity in the walk."
Both Bart and Femke are their own reserve for the finals in Amsterdam. Femke finished fifth with her other horse Nox and Bart finished sixth with his second horse Nirvana (he also rode this horse during the award ceremony). Both are only allowed to start one horse in the final and have to choose who they will take to Amsterdam. That also means that number 7 Charissa Buurmeijer with No Limit will also be delegated to the final.

Five-year-olds

There were also neat scores in the class for five-year-old dressage horses. The results were certainly very close at the top of the standings, but it was Beni Pachl who made the difference with Hexagons Miamanda and finished on top. Judge Adriaan Hamoen was very satisfied with this combination: "Miamanda has three very correct gaits and was presented very correctly. The combination just missed a fraction of activity in the walk. The scores were very close because right behind, Renate van Uytert-van Vliet with My Blue Horse Santiano deservedly came second. That horse is really a powerhouse and can canter very well. There were just some small disturbances in the test and we would have liked a little more control in the test. But definitely a great horse with a lot of potential for the future."

Charissa Buurmeijer and Beni Pachl win final selection match Subli Competition

The countdown to the semi-finals of the Subli Competition for Young Dressage Horses has begun. Last Saturday, November 12, the last selection competition for four- and five-year-old dressage horses was on the program and thus also the last opportunity to collect points for the next round on December 10 in Harmelen. Beni Pachl with Hexagons Miamanda convincingly won the class for five-year-olds and Charissa Buurmeijer with No Limit finished well above in the four-year-olds.

Both classes in Berkel-Enschot were judged by judges Mathie Boomaars and Karin Retera who were well aligned this competition. Judge Karin Retera looks back with satisfaction on the performances of the participants at the top of the standings, but also sees growth opportunities for many other combinations. Karin explains: "We have seen many beautiful and quality horses in both classes. Horses that - if trained the right way - have a lot of talent for the future. The Subli Competition is a talent test where we look at the qualities and talents of the young horse and that is only possible if the horse gets the opportunity to show those natural qualities. The way a horse is presented is therefore very important to us. The horse must be able to use its body in a natural way and be properly guided by the rider. Therefore, we do not like to see a horse being put in a certain position too much and being ridden uphill at a young age. It is our responsibility as judges to be honest about that and adjust the judging accordingly."

Looking at the moment

Judge Mathie Boomaars adds: "We really look at the class being ridden at that moment and only judge the performance of the combination we see in our ring. What a horse has done at other competitions or which rider is on the horse is not at all relevant to our assessment. A horse with a lot of natural ability and power presented on its own legs and free of the hand will always score high with us. And that's the way it should be."

Talent oozes from them

One combination that did that just fine and that the judges waxed lyrical about was the five-year-old Hexagons Miamanda who, under the saddle of Beni Pachl, earned a high score of 86.60. Karin says, "This horse is really a top talent which you rarely see. We saw a lot of his own suppleness and carrying capacity and ability to close. The talent is dripping off. In addition, Miamanda was presented nicely by Beni. If you continue to train this horse in a pleasant and nice way, you can grow towards the Grand Prix in a playful way."

Textbook

The four-year-old No Limit with Charissa Buurmeijer also scored high marks with the judges and won the class for four-year-olds with 85.00. Karin: "This horse may have looked like just an 'ordinary chestnut' but he has so much natural talent and ability to switch, we were very charmed by that. He walked nicely in balance and fine on his own legs. Really a textbook example of how we like to see it. But also number two Femke de Laat with Nashville Sw should definitely be mentioned. This horse has a lot of talent and was presented very professionally by Femke, appropriate to the level and age of the horse."

Nutrition tips for older horses

Feeding senior horses properly is quite a challenge. For example, you may give your senior too much feed, feed incorrectly or be too late to give extra feed. On top of that, older horses don't get nutrients from their feed as well. The specialists at Subli Horse Feeds have some tips.

1. Roughage is the basis of the ration also for your oldster

Chewing on roughage is a natural need of a horse. Make sure you make plenty of roughage available at all times. Even if your senior has fewer molars. The need for vitamins and minerals is extra high in older horses because they can no longer make and absorb everything properly themselves. Therefore, it is good to provide these through the diet.

Older horses have a harder time keeping themselves warm, so supplementing energy is especially important in the winter. Moreover, for the maintenance of muscles and tissue, it is important that your senior gets proteins that are extra easily digestible. So keep this in mind when choosing your "oldie's" feed.

Beni Pachl and Christel Heuseveldt score in Subli Competition Varsseveld

Friday, October 14, the second-to-last competition of the Subli Competition for Young Dressage Horses was held in Varsseveld before the semi-finals in Harmelen. It was one of the last opportunities for the competitors to score points. In the class for five-year-olds the most points went to Beni Pachl with the black and brown mare Miamanda. In the four-year-olds, Christel Heuseveldt with her horse No Secret was clearly the best.

The competition in Varsseveld was judged by judges Kristel van Duren-Bodewes and Van den Berg who were both well on the same page. Judge Kristel says: "In the ring we saw beautiful combinations and very quality horses with a lot of potential for the future. However, we did see some tension in several horses and some riders could let the horses walk a little more on their own legs. Which is very important with young horses."

Five-year-olds

Kristel continued: "In the five-year-olds, Beni Pachl with his mare Miamande was definitely the outlier with a total of 83.400. Bennie rode a super neat and good test. Miamanda is a fine dressage horse and walks nicely uphill. In the walk we would like to see a little more body use and a little more jump in the canter. But otherwise technically a very strong test. Behind Beni, Kim Alting finished second with Madison Ave with a score of 78.600. Her horse went through the track with a lot of release and power, only the finishing of the test could be improved a bit. Also, we would like to see a more active stride."

Four-year-olds

"In the four-year-olds, the horse No Secret under the saddle of Christel Heuseveldt really stood out. No Secret has a very nice stride and was nicely presented and nicely ridden, nice to the hand. The combination also showed a lot of rhythm. Actually everything was just right. In the number two Cynthia Eggenkamp with Noble Romance we saw some moments of tension, but because she solved them so neatly and sympathetically, she still finished high in the standings. Especially in the walk this horse was very strong and we rewarded that with a nine. But also in the trot Noble Romance went through the track very light-footed. We were very pleased with this combination. Kim Koolen finished third with Night Shadow. This horse showed a lot of rhythm and a great canter. Trial technique can still be improved and we would also like to see a bit more towards the hand. But definitely a horse with a lot of qualities."

High scores for Bart Veeze and Diederik van Silfhout in Subli Competition Tolbert

In a sun-drenched Tolbert on September 4 another selection competition of the Subli Competition for Young Dressage Horses was held. A large field of participants had traveled to the far north this Sunday with their talented four- and five-year-old dressage horses. Bart Veeze was the undisputed winner in the four-year-olds with his horse Nero. Diederik van Silfhout, just like the selection competition in Wapenveld, took the win in the five-year-olds with his horse Mister Maserati.

Section four-year-old dressage horses

The class for four-year-old dressage horses was judged by judges Van Hall and Drenth. Bart Veeze was head and shoulders above the field with Nero and achieved a great score of no less than 88.40. The experienced rider from Lochem looks back on his test with a satisfied feeling: "Nero was pretty relaxed and loose in the body. It was actually our best test in the Subli Competition so far so I am very happy with that. He can walk abnormally well and we got a nine for that as well as for the trot. He is always very relaxed and goes easily through the tests, that is really his strength. This week we are also competing in a class for four-year-olds at the World Young Dressage Horse Championships in Ermelo, so this competition in Tolbert was like a test competition for us. We wanted to try out some last things and that worked out very well. We are now working towards that and then of course we hope to participate in the semi-finals of the Subli Competition in December," Bart concludes.

Heading five-year-old dressage horses

In the class for five-year-old dressage horses as many as 18 competitors participated, with certainly the top of the standings achieving high scores. Judges Patrick Berends and Piet Groen were unanimous in their verdict and both pointed out Diederik van Silfhout with Galleria's Mister Maserati as the winner. Judge Piet Groen says, "We saw many talented horses in this class with a lot of potential for the future. Diederik's horse stood out for us. Mister Maserati is a fantastic moving horse with a lot of ability to close. He was presented very kindly by Diederik and showed a lot of suppleness. It was also the horse with the most collection. Very nice to watch." Right behind, Vai Bruntink finished second with Minte Lena. Judge Piet commented, "Minte Lena is a very good moving horse with a nice touch. Had an equally good walk, but just a little less. Was also just a little less collected and less powerful, so that actually made the difference. Then we have number three Fleur Prinsen with Messy D. Also a very nice horse with a nice silhouette and a nice head-neck posture. Three good gaits and lots of power to switch gears with lots of balance. But this combination just couldn't match the horses of Vai and Diederik."

Win in Subli Competition Boxtel for Charissa Buurmeijer and Dirk-Jan van de Water

On Sunday, August 7, a competition of the Subli Competition for Young Dressage Horses was on the program in Boxtel. High scores were handed out by the judges present at the top of the standings. Among the five-year-olds, Dirk-Jan van de Water with Le Vixen was the outlier and clear winner. The class for four-year-old dressage horses was won by Charissa Buurmeijer with No Limit.

The four- and five-year-old horses were judged in Boxtel by judges Maarten van der Heijden and Jacques van der Harst, who put up high points in both classes. According to jury member Jacques van der Harst, especially in the four-year-olds, the jury paid particular attention to the way of riding. He explains: "With young horses we like to see that they are presented in a friendly manner. The way of riding was really decisive for us today. The horses must go through the track in harmony and with a neat correct bridle. He must be left to his own devices and given the opportunity to walk on his own two feet. This was certainly the case at the entire top of the standings and we were really impressed by this.

Winner Charissa Buurmeijer with No Limit was the epitome of harmonious riding. We enjoyed that. The horse was presented very friendly and you could see that he enjoyed his work. That resulted in high scores. The same goes for number two Robin Heiden with New Market and number three Aniek de Laat with Newton M."

Big differences among the five-year-olds

In the class for five-year-old dressage horses, there was no doubt about the winner. Due to several dropouts, the number of combinations in the class was unfortunately limited. Dirk-Jan van de Water stood head and shoulders above the competition and scored a magnificent 86.880 with his horse Le Vixen, no less than nine percent higher than number two Natascha Bernoski-De Cocq with Medoc. Judge Jacques van der Harst was very clear about this: "The difference was indeed very big. Dirk-Jan van de Water with his horse Le Vixen was clearly the outlier and a paragon of calm and confidence. From the moment he rode into the arena, we as judges were already saying to each other: 'that will be all right.' Le Vixen was ridden nicely uphill and away from the hand, giving the horse the chance to fully use his back. We also saw nice hind leg use and he was presented with sufficient length. The self-carriage of the horses was still insufficient with some other combinations but with Dirk-Jan van de Water that was certainly fine. In number two Natascha Bernoski-De Cocq with Medoc we would have liked to see a little more self-carriage as well, although this horse was presented very professionally."

Wendy Kuiken and Diederik van Silfhout win Subli Competition Wapenveld

Participants of the Subli Competition for Young Dressage Horses were in action Saturday, July 9, in Wapenveld for already the fifth selection competition of the season. Wendy Kuiken won convincingly in the four-year-olds with Nick Wimphof. Diederik van Silfhout took the win in the five-year-olds with his horse Mister Maserati.

Judges Kristel Duren-Bodewes and Cor Jager were allowed to judge the combinations that entered the ring in Wapenveld and that yielded many nice results. Judge Kristel: "We have seen a group with very well moving horses that were presented nicely. Definitely in the top of classification. What struck us in particular is that there were many good 'steppers'. We were very impressed with the correct stride of many young horses, as this varies quite a bit."

Four-year-olds

Kristel continued: "In the four-year-olds, Nick Wimphof under the saddle of Wendy Kuiken really stood out for us. Really a beautiful and loose moving horse in all three gaits. Very nice to look at. That is also reflected in the high scores of 82.80. But we also enjoyed Laura Pronk's number two New Star. This horse has a lot of power and moves very strong and powerful. All that power only sometimes created just a little too much pressure and we would like to see just a little more looseness."

Five-year-olds

In the class for five-year-old dressage horses there were seven participants, two of whom were high standouts at the top of the standings: Diederik van Silfhout with Mister Maserati and Amber Hage with Mercurius. Judge Kristel: "Diederik is obviously a very experienced rider who also knew how to present his horse in a nicely correct way. But the differences with number two Amber Hage were very small. Both combinations were definitely matched and both had fine horses with a lot of potential for the future. Amber's Mercurius went very nice and loose through the track with lots of power and space and nicely ridden from back to front. He only showed a little less power than Diederik's Mister Maserati, which just made the difference. But we will certainly hear from both horses more often," Kristel concludes.

Judith Ribbels and Kim Alting top in Subli Competition Exloo

Under beautiful weather conditions, Sunday, June 26, a selection competition of the Subli Competition for Young Dressage Horses was held at Hippisch Centrum Exloo. In the class for four-year-olds Judith Ribbels stood head and shoulders above the competition and won convincingly with her horse Nanny Mc Phee. The class for five-year-old dressage horses was won by Kim Alting with Madison Ave.

The competition in Exloo was judged by judges Mascha Reijs and Linda Kanninga who look back on the competition with satisfaction. Judge Linda Kanninga says afterwards, "We saw a very varied and talented group of horses in the ring. In the five-year-olds, Judith Ribbels with Nanny Mc Phee was the clear winner with a score of 83.00. Nanny Mc Phee is a very beautiful big-framed horse who already showed a lot of carrying and balance for her young age. She walked very easy and well through the track and was presented very nicely by Judith. We especially noticed the good self-carriage, especially for a four-year-old horse. The second place was for Bart Veeze who went very nice and easy through the track with Nero. Nero could only have a little more balance and sometimes be a little more open in the bridle. But certainly a very talented horse with an appealing image. On the third place Wendy Kuiken ended with Nick Wimphof. A very talented horse with a lot of quality, only today he was just a bit too distracted by the surroundings which came at the expense of the exercises."

Five-year-olds

The class for five-year-old dressage horses had a small field of seven competitors. The judges quickly agreed on the winner. Linda says: "Madison Ave ridden by Kim Alting is a very nice horse with lots of suppleness and good gaits. This combination showed a very neat and nice test and was for us the clear winner of this class. The number two Maigret vd Watermolen, presented by Elizaveta Orekhova, is a very big and tough horse with a lot of potential for the future. Today there were still just a bit too many faults which you then see back in the points."

Femke de Laat and Renate van Uytert-van Vliet strong in Subli Competition Delft

On Tuesday, June 14, the third competition of the Subli Competition for Young Dressage Horses was held. The competitors were well matched and high scores were given by the judges. In the class for four-year-olds Femke de Laat dominated the top of the ranking and finished on top with Nashville. In the class for five-year-old dressage horses, Renate van Uytert-van Vliet was the best with My Blue Horse Santiano.

Everything was arranged to perfection at the beautiful accommodation of Manege De Prinsenstad in Delft, for both horses, riders and judges. Judges Mattie Boomaars and Marie-Louise Moerings look back on a great day with beautiful sports and strongly performing horses. Marie-Louise Moerings enthusiastically says: "We really enjoyed this day. The level of presentation was very high and we were very impressed with the quality of all the young horses in the ring. Really great to see. The Subli Competition is a pleasure to watch in terms of well-being, sportsmanship and horse-friendliness. The horses are nicely ridden loose, on their own legs, through the body and towards the hand. Without pressure and in a natural way that suits a young horse. That's how we like to see it. You notice that riders also become more and more aware of their own riding and look carefully at the right way to train a young horse. The horses we have seen in Delft almost all have a lot of future potential. Certainly of the horses at the top of the standings in both classes we are going to hear a lot more from them."

Marie-Louise continued: "I also want to give compliments to the organization in Delft because everything was top-notch. Manege De Prinsenstad is a big accommodation but there was a kind of calmness for those young horses, very nice. I think all the horses went back home this competition with a positive experience."

Four-year-olds

"Femke de Laat is absolutely a textbook example for training young horses and again in Delft she presented the two four-year-olds Nashville and Nox nicely. They are very different horses but both have a lot of quality. What I like about these horses is that they have a nice open connection. One has a bit more carrying power and the other runs a bit more through the body, but actually the differences between them are very small. We are definitely going to hear more from these horses."

Five-year-olds

"In the class for five-year-olds, the top three did little for each other with all high scores above 82%. My Blue Horse Santiano, ridden by Renate van Uytert-van Vliet, was very well presented and showed a lot of power. Uphill he stayed nicely balanced and besides that he also showed to be able to close very well. Truly a horse with a lot of potential. Hexagon's Gorgeous Black Art and Beni Pach's Miamanda were very different horses and slightly more finely built. But both were ridden very harmoniously by Beni, with a lot of shifting ability and rideability. Also very nice to see."

High scores for Bart Veeze and Annemijn Boogaard at Subli Competition Aerdenhout

Under sunny conditions, the second competition of the Subli Competition for Young Dressage Horses was held in Aerdenhout on Sunday afternoon, May 22. From the judges there was nothing but praise for the riders present with their talented horses. In the four-year-olds the results were very close, but in the end it was Bart Veeze who took the win with Nero. In the class for five-year-old dressage horses, Annemijn Boogaard was the best with Mr. Magnum Bth.

Both the class for four-year-olds and five-year-olds were judged by judges Piet Groen and Patrick Berends who were able to give very high points to the combinations. The judges were particularly pleased with the friendly manner in which the horses were presented. Patrick Berends says: "We really enjoyed seeing some phenomenal young horses, but what we especially noticed positively was that the horses were presented nicely by the riders. With a lot of harmony, nicely off the hand, from back to front and by letting the horses walk on their own legs. Exactly in a way that suits the age of the horses. That makes you as a judge really happy. Therefore kudos to all riders this competition. If they ride well, you have to reward that with good points and that's exactly what we did. We are not afraid to give high marks to combinations that deserve it."

Four-year-olds

And high marks were certainly handed out to the top three in the section for four-year-olds. Patrick continued: "The results were very close in the four-year-olds, because the horses at the top of the standings were all phenomenal. Bart Veeze's Nero (by Ferguson) was just a little bit more constant and quiet in the bridle than Femke de Laat's Nox (by Furst Romancier) and that made the small difference that made Bart first. With Nero the balance was just a bit better. He also showed a very good pure correct and step. But both horses were great. With Nox, for example, the canter was again sublime. Also the horse N (by Indian Rock) of Ingrid Ockhuisen who came third showed a lot of potential for the future, with an absolutely great trot. There was just a little bit of tension in the walk and some work could be done on the balance."

Five-year-olds

The top three five-year-olds were also rewarded with high points which resulted in finishing percentages above 80 percent. In this class, the winner emerged a bit more clearly. Annemijn Boogaard scored 83.00% with Mr Magnum Bth (by Expression) and took the victory. Patrick: "We really enjoyed Mr Magnum Bth. He walked nicely off the ground in the trot with lots of light-footedness and nice in tact. Definitely a very nice horse. But that can also be said of Mission (by Eye Catcher) who was presented nicely by Femke de Laat. Just like the number three My 7th Sunday (by In Style) of Renate van Uytert - van Vliet. All horses with a lot of potential for the future," concluded judge Patrick Berends.
