In order for your horse to gain weight, he must start taking in more energy and protein. Before adjusting the ration of a lean horse, make sure that your horse does not suffer from worms and that his teeth are fine. Give a lean horse an unlimited amount of good hay or silage. Grazing will also help the horse get fatter faster. Grass contains more energy and protein than hay and silage. In addition to roughage, a horse also needs concentrate. For example, you can supplement the roughage well with the Subli Mare Broth (also suitable for studs and rearing horses). You can support this with the Subli Omega 369 mix. Omega 369 Mix is a specialty of Subli. It is a highly concentrated energy supplement for horses and ponies with a very high content of vegetable oils (over 40%) that do not make horses fiercer.

If your horse is too fat, it is advisable to look carefully at the ration. Make sure the horse stays in good condition to prevent laminitis and not overload the joints. An appropriate diet for a fat horse should contain less energy (starch and sugar), but still have sufficient fiber and nutrients such as protein, vitamins, minerals and trace elements. Also, the Subli Mineralenbikkels may be an option. The feed recommendation is 30 to 100 grams per 100 kg of body weight. A 500 kg horse therefore needs to be fed a maximum of 500 grams per day in addition to good roughage and/or pasture. As a result, you end up feeding only 145 grams of starch/sugar.

Older horses need an appropriate ration to stay in shape and spend the last years of their lives as fit and healthy as possible. An older horse's body changes slowly, making extra attention to nutrition increasingly important. Muscle mass decreases, metabolism becomes less efficient and the function of liver and kidneys decreases. This reduces the absorption of protein, phosphorus and fiber from the diet. To old horses healthy as long as possible, many aspects must be taken into account.

Subli Seniores Priores is specially developed for horses and ponies that have problems with the absorption of common horse feeds such as hay, silage, chunks, grains, mueslis, et cetera. These problems are generally caused by dental problems.

Horses and ponies, for their state of health and well-being, must eat sufficient amounts of roughage daily. The intestinal system is geared to process large amounts of plant material with sufficient structure (crude fiber). If due to circumstances, such as bad teeth, this cannot be absorbed, the horse or pony has a big problem.

To achieve the desired result, for these horses, some of the energy from starch will have to be replaced with oil.

A high-fat ration is also great for horses that need to perform for long periods of time, such as endurance and dressage horses. The energy from oil is released slowly, making it mainly suitable for endurance performance. An additional advantage of oil is that horses get more charisma and a nice shiny coat. Oil is therefore especially attractive for dressage riders: a nice shiny horse and enough energy to run the test nicely without hotness or loss of zest. Of course, this is not only a desirable situation for dressage riders.

Sober breeds are more sensitive to sugars and starches than warmblood breeds and therefore develop obesity, insulin resistance and laminitis more quickly.

Proteins are made up of amino acids. Amino acids are the basis of all life on earth: without amino acids, no life is possible. In this sense, protein is also indispensable for the horse.

Performing, athletic, growing, pregnant and lactating horses need extra protein (or amino acids). Compared to some 15 years ago, today's roughages are often poorer in protein and certainly in the essential amino acids. To provide the performing horse with sufficient protein, Subli has developed the Subli Atleet developed. This is a protein/amino acid supplement for horses. You only need to feed a small amount of it: 0.3-0.5 kg per horse per day in addition to the existing ration is sufficient to provide the additional amino acids needed.

Ca (calcium) and P (phosphorus) are the most important bone minerals. These must be supplied in the correct ratio with the ration. This is because a skewed calcium/phosphorus ratio must be corrected by the body. This can cause long-term joint deformities. Therefore, it is important to provide Ca and P to horses in the right amount as well as in the right ratio. For mature, grown horses and ponies, the Ca/P ratio should be between 1.5/2:1; or in other words, there should be about 1.5 to 2 times as much calcium as phosphorus in the feed. For a growing foal, this ratio should be lower: about 1.5:1 (i.e., one and a half times as much calcium as phosphorus). Magnesium (Mg) should also be considered. In all Subli horse feeds the Ca/P/Mg ratio is such that it supports the animals' natural metabolism.

The most common cause of laminitis is a metabolic disorder, such as PPID (or Cushing's Disease) and EMS (Equine Metabolic Syndrome) and/or an improper ration. (Spring) grass can contain high levels of sugar and/or fructan. Combined with a concentrate feed, which contains high levels of sugar and starch, this can lead to disturbed bacterial flora in the blind and colon (or hindgut). With this disruption, the acidity of the gut drops, causing the good (or fiber-degrading) bacteria to die. When bacteria die, toxins are released that are absorbed by the intestinal wall into the blood. These toxins may eventually play a role in the development of laminitis.

A high-fiber ration is important for every horse, but keep in mind grazing on sugary spring grass. Adjust the ration to the horse's needs. A very suitable product is the Subli Diet Mix. This product has a very low sugar and starch content and also contains a postbiotic that supports normal digestion. Due to a lower energy content in this product, horses that need to perform more may need to be fed an energy supplement. A high-fat product, such as the Subli Omega 369 Mix extremely suitable.

At the beginning of gestation, the foal grows slowly and the mare can normally make do with the usual ration. By this is meant a ration of roughage and concentrates appropriate to labor intensity. In the last months of gestation, minerals such as calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, copper, zinc and manganese become more important. From the eighth month of gestation, the usual concentrates can be replaced by Subli Mare Broth.

A horse's muscles consist largely of protein. Proteins are made up of amino acids. Of these, there are more than 20 types, common and less common. Some of them (the essential amino acids) are always needed to form muscle. The others can partially replace each other (non-essential). Performing, exercising and growing horses need extra protein, or amino acids. Compared to about 15 years ago, today's roughages are often poorer in protein and certainly in the essential amino acids.

This depends greatly on the type of colic or surgery. Therefore, always ask your veterinarian for advice after such drastic incidents. After a colic attack or surgery, it is essential to start feeding roughage cautiously and not give any concentrate as long as the horse does not look lively, eat the roughage well or manure well. The Subli Seniores Priores can be a suitable supplement, as Subli Seniores Priores has a high crude fiber content and should be fed soaked. When in doubt, always consult a veterinarian.

Tying-up (or muscle soreness) is a phenomenon in which an excessive accumulation of lactic acid in the muscles leads to stiffness in the horse and a drastic decrease in performance ability. The manner and intensity at which muscle palsy occurs depends greatly on the horse itself, training, environmental factors and rations. Some horses are more susceptible to laminitis than others. There are also some breeds that are more susceptible to this. You should think about the austere breeds. It is important that these animals get less starch. The Subli Diet Mix is ideally suited for this. This can possibly be supplemented with the Subli Omega 369 Mix for more energy and with additions of vitamin E, vitamin C and selenium. Supplementing extra vitamin E and vitamin C makes sense for the removal of lactic acid formed to keep muscles supple. To utilize vitamin E, a horse also needs selenium.

Insulin's main function is to regulate blood sugar levels. During and after eating, blood sugar levels rise in a horse's body. Insulin then lowers blood sugar. Horses with insulin resistance produce a lot of insulin to process the sugars they absorb from the feed. A prolonged increase in insulin causes the cells to become insensitive to insulin, eventually rendering the horse unable to produce enough insulin to restore blood sugar levels. With insulin resistance, therefore, limit the amount of concentrate feed and, if possible, feed only a complete vitamin/mineral supplement. If you do supplement concentrates, choose the Subli Diet Mix because of its low sugar and starch content.

Research has shown that the cause of some intestinal problems (mild recurrent colic, weight loss and, for example, reduced performance) may be due to a gluten allergy. Horses with small intestinal problems may therefore benefit from gluten-free feed.
