High scores in selection competition Subli Competition Varsseveld
October 10, 2024
Last Friday, October 4, in Varsseveld, the second last selection competition of the Subli Competition for Young Dressage Horses was on the program. A large field of competitors came to the start to score points and try to get a place in the semi-finals. In the class for four-year-olds Emmelie Scholtens and her horse Port-au-Prince were supreme with an overwhelming score of 95%. In the five-year-olds, the victory went to Lara van Nek with her horse Obsession Taonga.
In the class for four-year-olds, 24 competitors started and were judged by judges J.A.M Huberts and M.T.H van Wissen. In the top of the standings, the judges handed out very high scores but there was one combination that stood out head and shoulders above the rest: Olympic rider Emmelie Scholtens with her four-year-old black Desperado gelding Port-au-Prince. For all nine components the combination received an amazing 9.5 and even a 10 for the component 'ability to switch'. The verdict of the judges was unanimous; a super presentation with a lot of harmony. Port-au-Prince was especially praised for its quality, power and balance. With a total score of 95%, there could be no doubt about the winning combination.
But other combinations also received high scores. The grey stallion Hexagons Power Dutch, ridden by Anke Moer, received a 9.5 for his walk and nines for his trot and canter. Nines were also scored for his suitability as a dressage horse and the rider's posture and seat. That resulted in a total score of 88% and a well-deserved second place. Completing the podium was Dinja van Liere with Succession with a score of 83.80%. This combination had already clinched a victory at the selection competition in Tolbert and thanks to this neat performance has a very good chance of winning a spot in the semi-finals on December 14 in Harmelen.
Five-year-olds
In the class for five-year-old dressage horses the tests of the thirteen participating combinations were judged by judges E.W. van Harselaar and A.E. Terra. Also in this class there were high scores in the top of the rankings. The black stallion Obsession Taonga rode a strong test under the saddle of Lara van Nek and scored particularly high marks in the gaits. Both the walk, trot and canter received a nine from the judges, as did his ability to switch gears and suitability as a dressage horse. That resulted in a final score of 87.20% and victory in the class. Second place was for Vai Bruntink with her horse Oletaire with 82.00%. This combination also came second last selection competition in Tolbert and in Varsseveld again took valuable points for their ranking in the standings. With a small difference Annabel Rootveld and Kuups Furst Fredo finished second with 81,40%. This combination already had a victory in Wapenveld and there is a good chance that we will see Annebel and Kuups Furst Fredo again in the semi-finals in Harmelen.
Standings after Varsseveld
Only one more selection competition is scheduled before the semifinals on Dec. 14 in Harmelen. The two highest results from the selections will count for placement in the semifinals. When all selections are completed, the best 15 horses per age group will receive an invitation to the semi-final on December 14. During this semi-final the combinations will compete for one of the five coveted starting spots for the all-decisive final that will be held during Jumping Amsterdam 2025.
