Diederik was brought up on equestrian sports. His father Alex van Silfhout is a well-known national and international dressage rider and has his own stables in Lunteren. In 2003 Diederik reached the podium for the first time at the NK for Juniors, finishing third with Luxform's Olympus. At the age of 16, Diederik made his debut in the Grand Prix with Dalwhinnie's Forum, making him the youngest rider until then to ride in a Grand Prix. He can look back on a brilliant career with Juniors, Young Riders and in the competitions for U-25.
Diederik van Silfhout was appointed reserve rider for the World Championships after the 2014 Dutch Dressage Championships together with the KWPN-approved stallion Arlando NH N.O.P., where he was immediately allowed to compete as a 26-year-old.
