McMary and So Chique Win the Subli Competition in Heeswijk-Dinther

At the fourth selection competition of the Subli Competition for Young Dressage Horses on Saturday in Heeswijk-Dinther, the judges awarded high scores to both the four- and five-year-olds. No fewer than twelve horses scored above 80. With a score of 87.6, McMary (by McLaren), ridden by Phoebe Peters, was the top five-year-old. Among the four-year-olds, So Chique (by San Amour), ridden by Kim Alting, won with a top score of 90.4.

Lots of 9s among the leading group of 4-year-olds

Kim Alting did very well among the four-year-olds. In this age category, she rode So Chique to a mega score of 90.4. Maxime Osse rode Selene G (by Fürst Dior) to second place with a score of 85.8, and Sweet Seven (by Kjento), ridden by Bart Veeze, took third place with a score of 84.8.

“This was a really great group with an outstanding leading group. Truly excellent horses—we were able to give out a lot of nines. We may well have seen the very best the Netherlands has to offer. The horses in the leading group displayed a great deal of suppleness, tact, and balance, and were also presented in a friendly manner,” says Piet Groen, who judged the four-year-olds alongside Jacorine de Graaff.

Winner So Chique scored a 9 or higher in all three gaits (walk 9, trot 9.5, and canter 9). “We were also able to award several nines for the other elements; Kim really rode the horse from the reins. Truly excellent. Selene and Maxime were also very good, with the trot being the highlight. And Bart’s Sweet Seven is also a very good horse; we gave this horse nines for the trot and canter. The pace was a bit fast, which led to a few minor errors.”

Last season's finalists are once again strong among the five-year-olds

Among the five-year-olds, McMary continued her winning streak. The mare had already won earlier this year under Phoebe Peters the final for four-year-olds at Jumping Amsterdam. Second and third place were also taken by finalists from Amsterdam. Daxx (by Dynamic Dream), who placed third in the final, took second place under Kim Alting with a score of 82.4, and Rufus Van ’T Houtsche (by Jameson RS2), who placed fourth in the final, finished third under Lotje Schoots with the same score.

The leading group performed very well

“The leading group was introduced very well. McMary stood out with such ease and natural grace, and so did Phoebe’s presentation. We were very impressed by the light-footedness, the ease, and the natural balance,” says Karin Retera, who judged the five-year-olds alongside Cindy Heijligers.

Daxx and Rufus Van ’T Houtsche received exactly the same score. “In terms of conformation, they are very different horses, but they share a natural balance. Daxx is very light-footed and elegant. He moves with great ease and maintained his rhythm beautifully. Rufus has a particularly good canter and also walks very well. Lotje also presented a technically sound test.”

The performance for the five-year-olds needs to be more relaxed and longer

Retera and Heijligers judged 26 five-year-olds in the ring. “It was a large group, which allowed us to get a pretty good idea of the overall picture. Unfortunately, we had to note that a great many horses were presented with their necks too short. We frequently had to note in the protocol that the horses should be presented with more relaxation in the topline and with more length. I believe much more attention needs to be paid to this. The quality of the horses is undoubtedly good—kudos to the Dutch breeders in that regard. But a large portion of the horses are not being presented optimally, which is a shame.”
